Model Specific Information

In the late 1930s the US Navy was look for a new high-performance ship-based fighter to replace their Brewster F2A and Grumman G-36 aircraft. Rex Beisel, of Vought-Sikorsky Aircraft submitted a proposal for a fighter powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800. In June 1938 this was accepted, and Vought-Sikorsky was awarded the contract for the prototype XF4U-1. The design was completed swiftly, and the silver XF4U-1 was first flown on 29 May 1940.

Compared to other aircraft in its class, the Corsair was a monster. The 18-cylinder radial engine was the largest at that time to be put into a fighter, driving an enormous Hamilton Standard propeller with a diameter of 4.04m (13ft 4in). In order for sufficient ground clearance for the propeller, the wings were bent down in inverted gull-form. The wing was designed for slow carrier landings, and 1,046 litres (273 US Gal) of fuel could be carried in some of the first integral fuel tanks.

Production figures totaled 4,102 by Vought, 3,808 by Goodyear, and 735 by Brewster.
